On the eve of a memorial service for Robert Hunt, a Bend man killed crossing the Bend Parkway on a bicycle with his teen-age daughter, a symbolic “ghost bike” was placed Friday at the crosswalk where he died two weeks ago.
“In Memory of Robert Hunt, RIP,” said a sign on the bike, painted white in a traditional fashion to mark a fallen bicyclist.A service will be held Saturday at noon at the Black Horse Saloon on Boyd Acres Road for Hunt, 55, a Texas native who “enjoyed spending time with his grandson, daughters and friends,” according to an obituary published Friday.Hunt, who worked as an electronics technician, has two daughters, Serena and Chelsea, and a grandson, Jonah, the obituary said. It was Chelsea, 14, who was crossing the parkway with her father, riding their bikes, on Oct. 9 when a motorist struck both of them, fatally injuring Robert Hunt and sparking a plea by many to improve or remove the marked crosswalk from the busy highway.The Oregon Department of Transportation has promised to weigh the various options for safety improvements.
An account has been set up at the Bank of the Cascades for Hunt’s two daughters, to help with expenses.
