MOUNT HOLLY

A Pennsauken man appeared in court Tuesday to face charges in the death of a

Mount Laurel cyclist.

Nehru P. Turner, 37, of the 3000 block of St. Martin's Road, is accused of

striking Russell C. McCurnin, 48, of the 100 block of Faith Court at the

intersection of  Route 70 in Evesham at 11:10 a.m. Sunday, police said.

Police said McCurnin was riding his bicycle on the shoulder of the roadway

at the time of the accident.

Turner is charged with causing death while operating a motor vehicle with a

suspended license, failure to maintain a lane, operating a vehicle on a

shoulder, driving while intoxicated and driving with a suspended license,

police said.

Thaddeus Drummond, assistant Burlington County prosecutor, said additional

charges depend on the results of blood tests by a lab.

"The possibility of additional charges looms heavy in this case," Drummond

said in court Tuesday.

Drummond said the defendant told police he would test positive for

marijuana, PCP and cocaine.

The prosecutor said several witnesses told police that Turner was driving

erratically before he struck the cyclist.

Superior Court Judge Thomas Smith Jr. reduced the bail for Turner from

$500,000 to $100,000 on the indictable charge -- causing a death while

operating a motor vehicle with a suspended driver's license.

Smith said the defendant must post surety or a bail bond for the entire

amount instead of the usual 10 percent.

Turner, who has served time in state prison, said he has four children and a

pregnant wife but did not say if he works.
