RCMP identify cyclist killed by truck
Monday, October 08 2007

A cyclist who was killed in a crash with a pickup truck Saturday night has been identified as 48-year-old Carmen Ryan of Edmonton.

Ryan and a female cyclist were in the southbound lanes of Range Road 22 near Parkland Drive around dusk Saturday when they were hit by a pickup truck travelling north, RCMP said.

Ryan was already dead in the west ditch by the time officers arrived at the scene east of Stony Plain around 6:55 p.m.

The female cyclist and the truck driver were taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries and later released.

RCMP said it appears the truck driver lost control of his vehicle. After hitting the cyclists, the truck continued northbound, went into the ditch, struck an approach and then came to rest in a farmers' field.

One cyclist was killed and another was injured when a pickup truck hit them both around dusk Saturday on a rural road east of Stony Plain.

Police are investigating. No charges have been laid in the case. It was not clear if the bicycle riders were wearing helmets.

Ryan is the third cyclist to have been killed in the Edmonton area in recent weeks.

Matthew Bensalah, 16, died on Sept. 17 after being struck by a car near a Mill Woods crosswalk.

Two days earlier, William Korol, 38, was killed by a pickup truck as he was cycling on the north shoulder of Stony Plain Road, just west Anthony Henday Drive. The driver stopped long enough to pull Korol's bike from under his truck before driving off.
