Cyclist killed on Yellowhead Trail

A cyclist who died Tuesday night was hit by at least two cars on the Yellowhead Trail in northwest Edmonton, police said.

According to police, the man was crossing the Yellowhead near 215th Street around 11 p.m. when he was struck by a westbound vehicle.

"After the cyclist was stuck, [the] cyclist landed on the roadway and then was struck by at least one other vehicle that we know of," Acting Sgt. Walter Kubrak said Wednesday.
The driver of the vehicle believed to have initially hit the cyclist pulled over and waited for emergency personnel to arrive, Kubrak said. The driver of the second vehicle that hit the man also stopped. Police are looking at the possibility a third vehicle also struck him but didn't stop.

The cyclist was pronounced dead on the scene. He was not wearing a helmet or any reflective clothing and his bike had no reflectors, Kubrak said.

The driver appeared to be travelling at normal highway speeds at the time of the collision.

Westbound traffic on the Yellowhead was closed from 215th to 231st St. for part of Wednesday as police continued their investigation.
