From the Edmonton Journal:

EDMONTON - A sunny morning commute turned tragic on Thursday, when a 50-year-old woman cyclist was killed after a collision with a garbage truck in downtown Edmonton.

The woman has not been publicly identified.

The crash happened at about 7:30 a.m. Police say the woman and the waste management truck were both heading east on 100th Avenue in the right hand lane. The collision occurred when the truck turned right to go south on 112th Street. Police say the cyclist kept going eastbound into the intersection as the truck made a southbound turn onto 112th Street.

The truck was driven by a 47-year-old man.

Const. Darren Sunley, with the Edmonton Police Service collision investigation unit, said speed and alcohol were not believed to be factors, and that the cyclist was wearing a helmet at the time. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Clair Ethier said she was sitting outside Edmonton General Hospital drinking coffee and reading a book on Thursday morning when she heard a garbage truck rumble by. She said she looked up and saw a young woman cyclist falling to the ground.

“The young lady toppled off the bike and just lay still,” Ethier said.

Chris Wintle was among the passersby that stopped to try to help the severely injured woman. While others at the scene called 911, Wintle said he started CPR until EMS arrived and took over.

“I’m a cyclist, I ride my bike a lot,” he said. “Having actually seen and felt the victim, it’s a little bit upsetting.”

By 8 a.m., the intersection was fully cordoned off with yellow police tape with an ambulance parked inside the tape, its lights still flashing.

A blood-stained backpack and a paper bag sat outside the ambulance. Nearby, a white bicycle lay on the curb with a white sneaker and a pair of broken sunglasses scattered on the sidewalk and road near a stain of blood.

The waste management truck, a car and an SUV remained cordoned off in the intersection as police investigated, and two grim-faced waste management workers sat nearby.

The death is Edmonton’s ninth traffic fatality of 2014, and the city’s first cycling fatality of the year. There have been two pedestrian fatalities, and the rest of the fatalities were vehicle collisions.
