Toward Carfree Cities Conference

Portland

Towards Carfree Cities VIII: Rethinking Mobility, Rediscovering Proximity

The goal of the Towards Carfree Cities conference series is to bring together people from around the world who are promoting practical alternatives to car dependence - walking, cycling and public transport, and ultimately the transformation of cities, towns and villages into human-scaled environments rich in public space and community life. The focus is on strategy, collaboration and exchange, assisting the practical work of conference participants - whether it be organising carfree days, promoting urban cycling, or building the carfree cities of the future.

The NYC Street Memorial Project will be presenting on the panel "Art, Advocacy, Media, and Direct Action: Complementary Strategies for Making Change on the Streets of NYC" on Thursday, June 19 from 4 - 5:30 pm.

Safe Streets for Bicycling

New York City

As friend and neighbor Sam Hindy knew well, bicycling is the greenest, most efficient mode of urban transportation. So what will it take to make NYC streets bike-friendly? A 15 minute presentation and ensuing discussion with Paul Steely White, the executive director of Transportation Alternatives. The Gate has pledged receipts from the evening will benefit Transportation Alternatives' efforts to improve NYC's bike path network and build a strong culture of street safety and respect for human-powered transportation.
