Chelsea Norman

Age: 24

Location:
1600 block of Waugh Drive
Houston , TX
United States

A ghost bike was installed for Chelsea.

From the Houston Chronicle

As Houston police investigate a
hit-and-run accident that claimed a bicyclist's life, an impromptu
memorial to the young woman has appeared in Montrose where a driver left
her mortally injured in the street.

Chelsea Norman,
24, left her job at Whole Foods Market, 705 Waugh Drive, at 10:17 p.m.
Dec. 1 and a couple minutes later was struck by an unknown [driver of a] vehicle in
the 1600 block of Waugh Drive.

An ambulance took her to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where she was pronounced dead Dec. 4, authorities said.

In memory of Norman, store employees are planning a ride on Dec. 8
from Whole Foods to her nearby apartment on Jackson Street, which
they're calling "complete Chelsea's ride," said store team leader Elizabeth Brown.

"We're gathering in the parking lot at 10 p.m. Sunday and will start
the ride at 10:17," she said. "Our focus is to raise driver awareness of
sharing the road and respecting our cycling community."

Fellow cyclists and friends of Norman have also organized the
"Chelsea Norman memorial ride for a safer cycling Houston," scheduled to
start at 7 p.m. Dec. 11 at Whole Foods, 705 Waugh. Riders are asked to
wear blue.

Sgt. Mark Cross of the Houston Police Department's vehicular crimes unit said Friday that investigators don't have any suspects yet but are following up Crime Stoppers tips that they hope will prove helpful.

"If anybody has any additional information on a vehicle or a suspect,
we really want the public out there to call us and let us know," Cross
said.

Private funeral services are to take place Dec. 7, while an outdoor
community memorial is scheduled for 2 p.m. Dec. 9 at the Sabine Street
promenade on Buffalo Bayou.

Norman's death has had a profound effect on her coworkers, Brown said.

"Here at Whole Foods we're a very tight-knit family," she said. "When
one member is affected, it affects all of us. One of the most
interesting things that has happened is the way she has pulled our store
and team member base together."

At the time of the accident, Norman was headed for her apartment, a
ride of five or six minutes, where her boyfriend, Whole Foods coworker Larry Villalobos, was waiting for her, Brown said.

Norman had moved to Montrose in the past couple months and was
excited about being able to bicycle to the store where she had worked
since July 2012, Brown said.

Norman worked in the specialty department, which features cheese,
chocolate, coffee, beer and wine, and was especially passionate about
wine, Brown said.

"She was incredibly knowledgable about wines and was passionate about
not just wines but pairings with cheese and other foods," she said.

A native of San Antonio, Norman attended Canyon High School in New Braunfels and was a 2011 graduate of the University of Houston's School of Hotel and Restaurant Management, according to her Facebook page.

As an employee, Norman was fun to work with, Brown said.

"She was one of the kindest, most giving people, always in a great
mood," she said. "She was always ready to do something spontaneous,
outrageous, a little goofy."

Norman and her boyfriend had talked about going to Europe to visit organic farms, she said.

Anyone with information about the accident is urged to contact the HPD Hit-and-Run Unit at 713-247-4065 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.

According to the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, the primary cause of death was multiple blunt force injuries.
