One woman bicyclist died and another was critically injured in a traffic accident on Old St. Augustine Road Monday afternoon.

The women were riding eastbound in the bike lanes of
Old St. Augustine road just west of Interstate 95 when they were hit by
one car and possibly two, said detective Robert Peck of the
Jacksonville Sheriff's Office traffic homicide divison.

Shortly before noon, a man driving eastbound in the
right-hand turn lane attempted to switch lanes across the bike lane and
hit the women. A car behind him may also have hit them. The bike lane
runs between the straight eastbound lanes and the turn lane. The
drivers have also not been identified pending an investigation, Peck
said, and no charges have yet been filed.

Authorities have not released further information,
but friends said Chastity Rettinger, 36, was killed in the accident.
Rettinger was a wife and mother of two boys, age 9 and 13, said Jason
Sizemore.

Sizmore, coach of a youth baseball team, said
Rettinger volunteered for the Mandarin Athletic Association. He
described her as a caring person involved in her community and St.
Joseph's Catholic Church on Loretto Road. Rettinger worked for Baker
Distributing Co., and Sizemore said she was riding her bicycle on her
lunch break with another co-worker, whose identity was not known.

A fund to help the family has been set up at Capital South Bank on Old St. Augustine Road, he said.
