A
restaurant deliveryman left in a coma after he was struck by a garbage
truck in Brooklyn while riding his e-bike this month has succumbed to
his injuries, officials said Tuesday.

Abdul
Bashar, 62, died at New York-Presbyterian Hospital Brooklyn Methodist
on Sept. 18, 10 days after he collided with a Pride Recycling & Demo
truck driven by an off-duty firefighter at the corner of 12th St. and
Third Ave. in Gowanus, officials said.

Bashar, who was working for Kanan, a nearby Indian restaurant, had just
rolled off the sidewalk into the crosswalk on his black Tailg e-bike
when he clipped the front bumper of the garbage truck, which was making a
left turn onto 12th St., about 9:30 p.m. on Sept. 8.

Bashar was thrown from the e-bike and struck his head on the asphalt,
officials said. He was drifting in and out of consciousness as medics
rushed him to the hospital, where he underwent brain surgery, officials
and family members said.

Kabir
said his father was “normally very careful" on his e-bike and that the
accident was yet another blow to the family. Kabir’s 53-year-old mother,
Shahnaz Bashar, has cancer and has trouble walking.

“Bashar’s death is a testament to the ongoing danger posed by large
commercial vehicles, specifically waste hauling trucks, to people
walking and biking,” said Conner, whose group is backing new legislation
to create commercial waste zones that would limit the travel of large
haulers.

The family moved to the U.S. in 2016 from their native Bangladesh and settled in the Bronx, relatives said.
