Alvaro Olsen, 54 of Jackson Heights, Queens was riding his bike on west36th sreet approaching Broadway at around 6pm when he was struck and killed by a DHL truck.
The truck driver remained at the scene and wasn't charged, police said.
Alvaro's bike was behind the truck when police arrived. Maritsa Ruiz, 28, who works in a nearby coffee shop said...
"Emergency crews tried to revive him, but nothing was working," Ruiz said. "Poor man."
Several witness who were on that street have reported to us about this crash. Alvaro's bike, messenger bag and helmet were left laying on the street behind the truck long after he was taken away.
Alvaro died at Bellvue hospital that night.
Alvaro was know as 'Fran' by his family and friends. He is very much missed by his son, Al Olsen Jr. who lives in New York City and his friends and family. He was buried in his native el Salvador.
A mass will be held for Alvaro Francisco Olsen at 6:15pm on Sunday May 18, 2008 at
St Francis of Assisi Church
