Daniel Martinez had just made his final run of the day as a bike messenger when he was struck by a truck on 5th Avenue and 82nd Street in front of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Daniel, known as Danny to his friends and family, was supporting a 10 year old daughter and his wife as a messenger. In his free time he enjoyed fishing. Immediately after his death, friends and family showed their love and loss with an improvised memorial at the crash site.
As Gothamist reported, media reports in the Daily News and DNAInfo alleged that Daniel had been joyriding by skitching on the back of the truck that ran him over. No charges have been filed, nor has there been any further investigation despite claims that the driver ran the light and the photographic evidence contradicting the skitching allegations. Many in the cycle messenger community questioned the truthfulness of the reporting and the lack of respect in the media for their fellow rider.
Sadly, reliable official documentation of the crash has been difficult
to come by as the NYPD was slow to respond. Also, it took the EMT at
least 20 minutes to show up. It was long after the crash responders
showed up that the investigation started, and whatever remaining
witnesses were questioned most of the first hand witnesses had left by then.
The family and friends also made a video about Danny and his crash and their fight for justice on UTube
