Dr. Carl Henry Nacht, a medical director and marathon runner, was killed by an NYPD tow truck that failed to yield as the truck driver turned through the protected West Side Greenway towards the NYPD tow pound. Dr. Nacht had been bicycling along the scenic path with his wife when the crash occurred. "He would travel to elderly patients' homes during lunch or in the evenings on his bicycle," said Donna Malech, a nurse who worked with Nacht for 10 years. "He'd spend about an hour at their homes, examining them and talking with them. He was interested and he was interesting."
In August 2008, this ghost bike was damaged, We were later contacted by someone that heard it had been smashed by a very angry driver of a black SUV.
Soon after, the ghost bike was replaced between the greenway and west side highway within view of all NYPD tow truck drivers entering and leaving the facility.
