Age: 34

Classon and Lexington Av
Brooklyn , NY
United States

Lauren Davis was on her way to work at Pratt Institute on a beautiful spring morning when she was fatally struck by a speeding turning driver who did not yield to her. The corner where she was hit is a designated slow zone. The driver was not charged immediately with any crime.

Memorials for Lauren were held in Brooklyn, Marin County, and near her family home outside of San Diego.  She is remembered by friends and family as an artist, scholar of Vanitas paintings & memento mori, a daughter, friend, buddhist, vegan, craftsperson, cyclist, baker and animal lover.

Her partner Mirza told DNA Info

He “remembered Davis as “a very bright person, with an even brighter personality. Molberg said Davis, who turned 34 last month, was an aspiring vegan baker who wanted to start her own baking business. She had a knack for crafts and embroidery — ornaments she made for the holidays would sell out at local stores...

Davis was passionate about animals and fostered stray dogs and cats she found on the street, along with caring for her own cat and dog, Molberg said. She also loved art and studied vanitas paintings, a Dutch 16th- and 17th-century style that explores the worthless pursuit of earthly pastimes,”

Thanks to the advocacy of family and friends witness accounts confirmed in the media that Lauren was riding safely, disputing the initial NYPD accounts widely reported in the media. “Unfortunately someone reported this incorrectly and it has been horrible to see that,” said her partner. The NYPD  recanted their initial account, and stated they are ‘discussing filing charges’, but to date nothing has been announced.

A ghost bike was made in her memory by her partner, Mirza, a volunteer with the NYC Street Memorial Project. After James Gregg, was killed on his bike in Park Slope a few days later, Borough President Eric Adams led a memorial ride between the two crash sites. Adams called on police to refrain from publicly discussing details of crashes while investigations are underway, according to the Brooklyn Eagle. “We should not assume that the cyclist was always the person responsible for a crash or had accepted the risk simply by climbing on a bicycle,”

Her ghost bike is now covered with embroidered skulls, flowers and pictures of Lauren as well as pleas for witnesses to come forward. Family and friends are advocating for a thorough investigation and are still looking for witnesses. [contact streetmemorials [at] gmail [dot] com if you have info]
