The Daily News spoke to his friends and family:

"A Queens bicyclist who died after he collided with an MTA bus was a
competitive cyclist and a dedicated worker who chased the American dream
for more than 20 years, friends told the Daily News.

Salvador Chairez-Rodriguez, 50, emigrated from Mexico City about two
decades ago in search of a better life, said Sal Torres, whose family
has known him since around the time he arrived in New York.

He had worked at Virgil’s BBQ in Times Square for years, Torres said,
and later took other jobs in the restaurant industry to make ends meet.

“He’s been my dad’s best friend for years,” said Torres, 27, whose
family rented an apartment in Woodside to Chairez-Rodriguez for over a
10 years and whose father worked with the avid bicyclist at a restaurant
together more than two decades ago.

“He introduced me to cycling. He used to ride competitively,” he added.
“He was the quintessential immigrant from Mexico, working hard to find
the American Dream ... He was starting with low paying jobs, learned the
language, became a server, became a bartender, always striving to be
better.

“(He was) definitely a larger than life type of guy. He was a great person, hard worker...He was a happy person to be around.”

...

Chairez-Rodriguez’s roommate, James Fabian, 33, said Chairez-Rodriguez was working inside a restaurant until the pandemic hit.

That’s when he got out on his bike and started making food deliveries, Fabian said.

“Days before I see this guy and now he’s dead,” he said. “It’s sad.”
