Shamar Porter

Shamar Porter was on his way home to tell his mother about his recent Little League victory when he was hit and killed by a minivan near his home in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Shamar had been walking his bike in the crosswalk when the traffic light changed and a driver tried to pass the car in front of him without checking for pedestrians. The minivan’s driver was not charged with any wrongdoing.

"I’m just glad he was loved," said his mother Shawnette Porter, "He was my baby, my only child."

Shamar’s obituary reads:

You were our shining star, who brought sunshine into everyone’s life whom you came in contact with. His smile, laugh, charm and courtesy always brightened up the room. He was very intelligent for his ten years. Physically he was ten years old, but mentally he had an old spirit like he was here before. He thought he knew everything. One of his favorite phrases was "but why?" We always had to remind him that he was only ten years old. He was the shortest in his group, but the bravest. He would challenge you to anything. He was a big time sore loser because he always wanted to be the winner. He had so much charisma; he was a little lady’s man. All the girls adore him. Every sport was his sport. He loved baseball, soccer, volleyball, football and chess. He even had a green thumb; he loved to take care of plants. Shamar was a special kid, he had touched so many people’s lives, he was loved by so many people from the small ones to the older ones.
