Tchaka Cooke was riding his bike on Union Turnpike in Queens when he was fatally hit by someone opening the door of a parked car. Although dooring a cyclist is illegal, NYPD did not charge the driver as reported by Gothamist
Tchaka was a lighting technician for the Big Apple Circus, which currently has an exhibition in Cunningham Park. The circus' manager, Tom Larson, was quoted in the Post as saying he was "an immensely valuable part of our circus family."
For some reason, his name was never reported in the press, and we learned of his name from Tchaka's sister Lavonne emailed us to say that many people loved him.
A memorial blog was set up in his memory, in which he is remembered as an artist and a friend.
A photo of Tchaka at work at the Big Apple Circis in 2010 was posted on Flickr.
