Walter Ayala
Wednesday, October 30, 2013
Age: 36

Location:
St. Paul’s pl. and Third ave. near Gouverneur Playground
Bronx , NY
United States

When we visited Walter's ghost bike in April 2014, we learned that he lived just around the corner from where he was hit, and that he was on his way to work that morning. We also learned from an eyewitness that the driver was on her cell phone and was speeding.

From the Daily News

Walter was riding west on St. Paul’s Place near Gouverneur
Playground about 6:38 a.m. when he was struck by the driver of a 2001 Toyota headed
north on Third Ave., cops said. Walter died at the scene of the crash. The motorist remained on the scene. The investigation is continuing, cops said.

NYPD told Streetsblog it appears Ayala ran a red light and the motorist
had the right of way. NYPD didn’t specify how the agency determined who
had the right of way, and provided no information about driver speed. A
spokesperson said no summonses were issued and the investigation is
ongoing.

The crash was also covered by the NYPost and Gothamist .
