Xellea Samonte
Saturday, June 23, 2018
Age: 22

Location:
35th street and 23rd avenue
Queens , NY
United States

Xellea Samonte was killed when  a van collided with her at the
intersection of 35th Street and 23rd Avenue shortly after 11 p.m. on
July 23.

A vigil was held for Xellea later that same week.  Local cyclists raised attention to the fact that this intersection is very dangerous, and the location of several crashes.

According to the Queens Chronicle"The investigation conducted by the NYPD
Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad determined that Xellea
Samonte of Shore Boulevard was riding eastbound (actually more
northbound) on 35th Street within a marked bike lane...

The NYPD on Tuesday declined to comment on an article posted on the
website Streetsblog NYC
that accused the department of slandering
Samonte by publicizing its determination that she ran a red light. The
writer says police often take a driver’s word for what happened in fatal
crashes. The department would not say how it determined Samonte ran the
light.

In another Streetsblog article, a witness claimed
the light turned yellow as Samonte passed underneath it, but a
commenter on that story said he witnessed the crash and saw her go
through the red light."
