MANHATTAN — A 74-year-old cyclist
died a week and a half after a cab's door opened and knocked him from a
bike lane into Union Square traffic, where he was struck again by an
Uber car, NYPD officials said.
Xin Kang Wang was riding east in the East 20th Street bike lane
between Broadway and Park Avenue South when he slammed into the opening
door of a Toyota Camry as it discharged a passenger, which knocked him into the path of another Toyota livery cab about 6 p.m. on May 4, police said.
Wang, of the Lower East Side, remained at Bellevue hospital until Sunday, when he died, police said.
Police had incorrectly identified Wang as a female in a press release
Thursday morning. An NYPD spokeswoman corrected the department's
account Friday afternoon.
There were no immediate arrests, police said. But police ticketed the
cab driver, a 32-year-old New Jersey man, for discharging his passenger
in a bike lane, officials said.
The cabbie wasn't licensed with the city's Taxi and Limousine Commission and had New Jersey plates, a TLC spokeswoman said.
The Uber car that fatally struck Wang is affiliated with the Zwanzig base, officials said.
