Darrel and Sheryl McDaniel

Darrel McDaniel, 65, and Sheryl McDaniel, 61, were killed while on their regular bike ride around Hagg Lake. They were highly visible and wearing helmets, and riding legally on the shoulder of Highway 47, north of SW Anderson Road and south of the City of Forest Grove. They were struck by the driver of a 2002 Saab who was trying to pass another vehicle. The driver, Patricia Suhrbier of Hillsboro, 58, was not intoxicated. She swerved for reasons the District Attorney's office cannot elaborate on (for confidentiality reasons), and killed the McDaniels. The crash happened at 11:45 am. The Bicycle Transportation Alliance monitored the crash investigation on their site.

According to this article, although the District Attorney admitted Suhrbier hit the McDaniels because of "momentary inattention," no charges were filed against her.

The McDaniels were avid outdoor enthusiasts, participating in activities such as cycling, waterskiing, hiking, fishing, and swimming regularly. Sheryl was passionate about cooking, baking, and making crafts, and the couple enjoyed gardening together. They were devoted to their children and grandchildren. According to this article and this blog, two ghost bikes were placed at the site on the one year anniversary of their deaths.
