Nicolas Levi Moreno

Age: 17

Location:
99E/McLoughlin and River Road
Portland , OR
United States

Nick was crashed into by a car while crossing the street at Highway 99E/McLoughlin Blvd in
Gladstone (10 miles south of downtown Portland) just before midnight. More details on the crash as reported by the Oregon State Police are here: Bike Portland

Nicholas was also known as "Fat Nick" and was an accomplished BMX biker.

Nick's mom writes:

"He loved to Float"

Nick Moreno, 17 years old
also known as "Fat Nick" to his friends.
His feet spent more time in the air than on the ground.
When Nick was very young he had a passion for anything with wheels.
It wasn't until we moved to Milwaukie, Oregon in 2005,
that Nick finally found his real passion....
"Floating" as he called it.....on BMX bikes.

You couldn't pry Nick away from his bike.
Riding and jumping had become his life.
If he wasn't riding and jumping himself...
he was helping others learn to ride and jump.
He wanted others to experience that ethereal
feeling of "floating" that he loved so much.
He poured his life into others...
He had become a mentor to many
in the greater Portland area.

On August 24, 2008....
Nick and his fiancee' Kelsey Ludahl
gave birth to a beautiful baby girl.
They named her Alyssa Nicole Moreno.

I'll never forget....
the first time Nick had to be away his new baby girl.
I heard him walk in the front door and head to his bedroom.
I then heard Nick crying...
He then walked into my room and said
with tears rolling down his cheeks...
"I miss her so much!!"
Nick was broken-hearted
about having to be away from his new daughter.

Nick was a very loving and extremely dedicated father.
If he was not working,
he was spending time with Kelsey and his baby girl.
As his mother, I had never been so proud of him...
this young man had more dedication to his new little family
than many older men that I see.
He desired more than anything,
to be a good husband and father.

As any good man should be...
Nick was very proud of his little family.
He had great plans for the future
and he had all support in the world
from loving family and friends.

Then...On October 28, 2008 while riding home,
Nick's was hit by a car on McLoughlin Blvd.
Nine hours later, suffering from major brain trauma,
Nick's life on this earth ended, as he took his last breath.

Nick was buried at Pioneer Cemetery in Redland, Oregon.

The truth....
about Nick's death!

Months after Nick's death we were told a completely different story by someone who actually witnessed the accident.

Nick did not run a red light as we were previously told by Oregon State Police. Nick and a friend, both on bicycles, were traveling North "in the bike lane" riding towards Portland.

Witness, Crystal was in her vehicle going northbound when she passed Nick and his friend going in the same direction. As she passed Nick and his friend, Nick made eye contact with her.

After she passed them, she looked in her rear view mirror and witnessed the vehicle behind her hit Nick. Crystal immediately made a u-turn and pulled over at the crash site where Nick was lying on the ground unconscious, and Nick's friend was crying, sitting on the curb.

The man that hit Nick still says he didn't see anything, he didn't know what he hit, yet the car immediately in front of him witnessed the entire accident including all people involved. Did he not even see the car in front of him??

Gladstone police and Oregon State Police soon arrived thereafter.

Why these firsthand witnesses "Crystal" and "Nick's friend" were not included in the Crash Report, we have yet to find out. Nick's mom is currently working on retrieving information from Oregon State Police.
