'Ghost bike' marks memorial to Sacramento State student

RP GHOST BIKE[3].JPG

A "ghost bike" memorial reminds students of the death of one of their own outside Sacramento State University.

The ghost bike, a riderless bicycle painted white and anonymously
left tied to a traffic pole at the university entrance, is in memory of
student Arlene Sasse, 22, who was hit by a car while crossing J Street
near the entrance to the campus in the early hours April 1. Police said
Tuesday they are still investigating the crash.

Next to the ghost bike are flowers, notes and a copy of The Bee story about Sasse's death.

A photograph of Sasse is attached to the light standard.
In the photo a smiling Sasse sits on an overstuffed chair and holds a
guitar.

The memorial is in a pedestrian island where walkers and bicyclists wait for the signal to change.

Sasse had hoped to land a job as an occupational psychologist after receiving her degree next month from California State University, Sacramento.

The psychology major was crossing J Street at the Carlson Drive
intersection about 1:45 a.m., when she was struck by a vehicle traveling
westbound on J Street. Police said the driver did not see Sasse, whose
bicycle did not have a light or reflectors.

Sasse was born in the Netherlands and came to the United States when
she was 3 years old. She grew up in the Bay Area city of Albany and
played volleyball with the Golden Bear Volleyball club in Berkeley.

After graduating from high school, she attended California State
University, Chico, but later moved to Sacramento to live with her
mother. Van Wolferen said her daughter attended American River and Sacramento City colleges before transferring to CSUS two years ago.

She worked as an office assistant at the CSUS Testing Center.

The stark white ghost bike in memory of Sasse is a block from a ghost
bike memorial to another bicyclist who was hit and killed at Carlson
and H Street last year.
