Age: 23

Location:
Howe overpass
of Hwy 50
Sacramento , CA
United States

Taken from an email  we received from Todd's mother:

I would like to thank [the Sacramento Ghost Bikes project] for placing a “Ghost Bike” at the site of my 23 year-old son’s death.

Todd Mendon was killed by a motorist in the early morning hours on
April 18, 2010. Todd was riding a bike that he had borrowed from a
friend; he did not own a car, as he was a Sacramento State University
student and lived near the campus. He was traveling on Howe Ave. going across the over-pass of Highway 50, when a young woman driving a Ford SUV with her 3 girlfriends in the car with her did not see Todd, and she ran him over. She hit him with the front of her vehicle; she came right upon him, not even paying attention to her driving, and ran him over. The police called it a "Tragic Accident."

My husband John and I live just over 100 miles from where Todd was killed. We went down to Sacramento last Saturday to visit the site where he left this life too early and to see the Ghost Bike.

We are so touched that fellow bicyclist felt the need to remember this young bicyclist, Todd, and to remind other bicyclist and motorist to share the road. Cars kill; bikes do not. Todd was obeying the laws, with the exception of the fact; the Diamondback bike he was riding did not have a rear reflector. Diamondback bikes do not put reflectors on their bikes. Todd did have a powerful flashlight strapped to his wrist and had while riding that night.

Again, thank you so very much for placing the bike near Howe Ave and Hwy. 50, it means so much to Todd's family. We taped a small picture of Todd to the bike's frame, as there was no plaque. I am just touched that he is remembered.

He loved life, and it was taken from him too early.
