Walter "John" C. Joller Jr., a retired Navy captain and experienced cyclist, was nearing the end of his 55-mile bike commute when he was struck from behind by a car that drifted into the bike lane. According to the North County Times, Joller died at the scene of the crash despite efforts by paramedics to save him.

In a USS Nimitz newsletter, John considered himself an "HCC," Hard Core Commuter, who bought a bicycle during the gas crisis of the late 1970s and commuted 58 miles round trip 2-3 times a week. He said, "I am a commuter first, a social rider second. The people, the fun and the love of the sport keep me going on rides."

Acquaintances recounted a man who loved family and friends. The many positive testimonials provided to the press show that he is much loved in return and will be missed.

An online memorial has been established here and several online forums and blogs have writtne about the crash and ghost bike here and here.
