"Ghost Bike" Honors Sioux Falls Cyclist

by Tom Hanson, Anchor

August 19, 2010

The victim in a fatal accident involving a bicycle and a pickup
truck is indentified as 49 year old Kevin Lee Rogers of Sioux Falls. The
accident happened Wednesday night on West 57th Street in Sioux Falls.

Thursday
night, Sioux Falls area cyclists gathered to mourn the loss of a fellow
rider. They placed a "Ghost Bike" at the scene of the accident.

The cycling
community showed what a close knit group it is. Friends of Rogers and
some who didn't even know him showed up to pay their respects during the
placement of the "Ghost Bike."

They placed flowers and a sign. Organizers say the idea for Ghost Bikes started in St. Louis.

Michael
Christensen says, "We paint a bike white and chain it to a nearby sign
post, or in this case a street light and it just marks the place, a
place where tragedy has happened and it's a reminder we don't want this
to continue to happen."

Joe Stiller and his wife showed up
tonight. Joe was hit on 41st Street two years ago. Unlike Rogers, he
survived his encounter with a car. He says an event like this is
important for all cyclists.

Stiller says, "What made me come out
is that I felt a loss when I heard a fellow cyclist was hit. We didn't
know him, but he shared the same passion that we did."

Organizers
say the last cyclist killed in Sioux Falls was four years ago. They
hope an event like this will remind everyone to drive safe and watch out
for cyclists.
