Unique memorial meant to bring awareness to pedestrians, bicyclists

SPOKANE, Wash. - Two weeks after a 56-year-old man was struck and
killed while riding his bike in downtown Spokane, a unique memorial in
honor of David Squires can be seen at the intersection of Sprague and
Division.

Scott Reckord, 49, is accused of hitting Squires on March 1 as Squires rode his bicycle in a crosswalk at Sprague and Division.

The
memorial, a bicycle painted white and placed at the intersection by
Spokane City Councilman Jon Snyder, is meant to bring awareness to a
problem that experts say exists not only in Spokane, but across the
country.

"It's well documented that it's a safety issue. We've
had 400 deaths monthly in our country and in the last 15 years, 76,000
pedestrian deaths," said former chair of the All City Pedestrian
Transportation and Traffic Committee, Gail Prosser.

Prosser is
teaming up with local lawmakers to propose changes to Spokane streets
in an effort to create safer paths for bicyclists to use.

Appropriately,
a public meeting to discuss public participation in a street plan to
make streets safer for pedestrians and bicyclists is scheduled to take
place next Wednesday at the East Central Neighborhood Center at 6 p.m.

While
Prosser says that our society is based around automobiles, making safer
routes available for pedestrians and bicyclists is important for all.

"Everyone ultimately, whether they drive a car, take the bus, ride a bike, become pedestrians too," said Prosser.

The East Central Neighborhood Center is located in the 500 block of E. Stone.
