An exerpt from an article in the Toronto Star:

It's been almost a year since Amanda McKinnie's husband, Alan Tamane, 47, died in a cycling accident. On the morning of June 8 Tamane said goodbye to his wife of 16 years and their four kids, and headed off to work.

He never came home.

Tamane was killed when a city maintenance truck struck him on Bayview Ave., on a stretch of road where there was no bike lane. No charges were laid.

McKinnie says that not enough is being done to make the roads safe, even as the city continues to promote cycling. Including last week's fatality, 12 cyclists have been accidentally killed in Toronto in just over four years, says Const. Steve Burns of Traffic Services. "I want the city to be accountable for the fact that they are promoting people to ride their bikes to work – which is what Alan did – and are not making it safe to do so," says McKinnie.

She says her husband's death could have been avoided if the road had a bike lane – and if more had been done to teach drivers how to share the road with cyclists.
