Chuck Peterson regularly rode on Highway 60 between his home in Morristown and Wickenburg. On a Tuesday morning, an SUV driven by Patricia Headley, 30, of Phoenix ran into him in the westbound lane near the Hassayampa River Preserve.

Chuck received fatal injuries. The driver of the S.U.V. was not injured, according to the Wickenburg News

This crash prompted Susan Saunders to speak at the Wickenburg Common Council in October, 2007. The notes record her testimony as follows:

Susan Saunders, a County resident, addressed Council by stating she was present because of Chuck Peterson, the gentleman who was killed on U.S. 60 just two weeks before she got to Town. She wanted to make a difference for the Town so in Chuck’s memory; she was forming a non-profit corporation called “Share the Road”.

Ms. Saunders reported she already managed to get ADOT to cut back the bushes along the shoulder of the highway. She was asking for community support and wanted Council to recognize her face because she was going to be around fighting for safer road crossings especially by the public pool and some other areas and wanted everyone’s help in making the roadways safer.
