Age: 17
Location:
Bishopthorpe Road
York
United Kingdom
Ruby Milnes was cycling along the Sustrans Route 65, an off-road cycle track 100 meters from the nearest road, when she was run over by a lorry coming through a barrier. There are no signs for drivers or cyclists, despite York City Council's cycling officer ordering them to be put up.
Friends remember Ruby as a warm person with a streak of individuality, someone who always had a smile on her face and made time for others.
Within hours of its installation, the bike was covered in messages from friends and passers-by. Ruby's friends wish to paint a mural in her honor somewhere along the route. One friend said, "She enjoyed art and rather than doing something that everybody does this is more individual. Also, it's a reminder of what has happened and a reminder to other cyclists to be careful when they are on their bikes."
