Troy Cyclist Killed, Driver Charged
An Albany man has been charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI) following a Sunday, July 17th crash on Route 66 in Sand Lake that killed 43-year old bicyclist Robert Zayhowski from Troy. At about 11:20 am the motorist swerved across the oncoming lane and slammed into Zayhowski, who was traveling in the opposite direction, State Police said. The bicyclist suffered massive trauma and was pronounced dead at Albany Medical Center shortly after the incident. Zayhowski, an avid cyclist, was riding with a friend at the time of the accident.
The driver of the truck, Jesse Thompson, 46, had a blood-alcohol level that exceeded 0.10 percent. He was arrested last year for DWI but allowed to plead guilty to reduced charges of reckless driving and pay a $140 fine, according to court records. Because the crash involved a fatality, felony charges may be sought in this crash. Robert Zayhowski loved cycling, hiking with friends, and white-water rafting. He was a member of the Mohawk Hudson Cycling Club, the Schenectady Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club, and an Adirondack Forty-Sixer, having climbed to the summit of the 46 major peaks.
