A 26-year-old Canton resident was crossing her bike heading east
across Haggerty Thursday night about 8:15. A Jeep with a driver from
Canton was heading south on Haggerty. They arrived at the intersection
with Michigan Avenue just at the same time.
"The vehicle had
stopped for the red light and was preparing to make a right hand turn.
At that time, the cyclist began walking across the crosswalk and the
vehicle made the turn apparently not seeing the pedestrian and striking
her," said Canton Police Sergeant Patrick Sullivan.
The bicyclist had just come off a bike path and died from injuries at a Ypsilanti hospital.
"It's still under investigation," Sullivan said. "No indication of alcohol or drugs being involved in this."
Another bicyclist that spoke with FOX 2's Bill Gallagher said the crossing is dangerous.
The
tragedy underscores the importance of drivers being especially careful
in the warm weather with so many people out on their bikes.
"The
summer, warm out, more and more people out on foot and riding bicycles.
We just hope that everybody's a little more cautious. Slow down a little
bit," said Sullivan.
The making and installing of a ghost bike was done by collaboration on MMBA:
