Five Unknown Cyclists Killed in 2006

At the end of the 2nd annual memorial ride, we dedicated a plaque above a ghost bike to remember all cyclists who were killed on our city's streets in 2006.
We knew about the deaths of 14 cyclists. This plaque was placed to remember the countless fallen cyclists whose deaths never made the news.
We installed a ghost bike for a cyclist named Ivan Morales whose death had been reported in the news in 2006.
After our ride, he contacted us with the great news that he had been revived in the ambulance, recovered from his injuries, and has returned to riding his bike every day.
This happy surprise brought the number to 13 known deaths in the year. Later, an article quoted the NYPD as saying there were 16 deaths in 2006. In late 2007 another article quoted the NYPD saying that there were 14 cyclist deaths in 2006.
The most recent figure quoted by the DOT stated that there were 18 deaths in 2006.
We know nothing more about the people reflected in these figures. We care about all cyclists killed on NYC streets, reported or unreported, included or absent from official statistical counts.
In January 2008 we removed this ghost bike and plaque because of construction on Houston Street.
