Nancy Pease was riding the NYC Century Bike Tour, when a drunk driver struck her and the riders in her group. She died later of her injuries.
We stopped by to add flowers to the ghost bike months after we installed it, and met a group of witnesses to the crash. They had decided to look after this ghost bike to honor Nancy even though they had never met her.
According to the Daily News:
Pease
was stopped at a light on 12th Ave. near 39th St. in Borough Park with
several other bicyclists when Pina—Morocho rammed into them about 9 a.m.
on Sept. 10.
When first responders arrived, Pease was unconscious underneath Pina-Morocho's Dodge Caravan, cops said...
...Relatives called Pease, a teacher, a warm and compassionate woman who had an "infectious sense of fun."
"Words
cannot convey how hugely she will be missed by her family and friends,"
Pease's sister-in-law Nicola Sinclair wrote in a statement on behalf of
her family. "She had a talent for connecting instantly with people,
taking an interest in their lives and offering unwavering support and
friendship."
"She
made friends wherever she went and had a positive impact on many lives —
both professionally as an educator, and personally as a volunteer and
friend," Sinclair, 51, added. "She found most joy in her family, who are
comforted by the knowledge that Nancy's positive legacy will extend far
into the future."
Around
6,000 cyclists participate in the bike tour, which is organized by
Transportation Alternatives. The group advocates for safer streets for
pedestrians and cyclists.
