Robert Sommer

We installed this ghostbike on June 27, 2019, on July 9th we heard from Robert Sommer's family that NYC Parks staff had removed this ghost bike. The developing story about the ghost bike removal was covered by the Brooklyn Paper and StreetsBlogNYC, which quoted a family member:

“Here we are today unable to understand what I can only describe as
the equivalent of grave robbery,” said Roman, an aunt. “This act is
heartbreaking and outrageous at the same time. There exist miserable,
malcontent, misfits who only understand destruction.

“Thank goodness not all of us are like them. Apparently, they have
never known the kind of love, kindness and generosity that Rob showered
everyone with. Rob, in heaven, has already forgiven them,” Roman added.

Robert Sommer was riding his bike, crossing Avenue U near E. 33rd Street in Marine Park when he  was hit  at about 8:20 p.m. by a 20-year-old motorist according to StreetsBlogNYC

Paramedics rushed Sommer with severe head trauma to Coney Island Hospital, where he died. Police
say the driver remained on the scene. No arrest was made nor any
summonses issued. The investigation is ongoing, cops said.

Sommer, age 29, of Brooklyn passed away suddenly on Sunday, May 12,
2019. Robert was born December 9, 1989 in Brooklyn, New York. Beloved
son of the late Ellen McNally Sommer and Robert Sommer, Jr. Dear step
son of Carmen Pineda. Loving brother of Janine Petrossian and her
husband, George. Cherished brother of his best friend Thomas McNally and
his wife, Rene. Treasured uncle of Ariana, Lukas, Makayla and Kennedy.
Dear nephew of Patricia Tuey. Adored cousin of many.
