Twelve Unnamed Riders Killed in 2005

A ghost bike, installed at the corner of Houston Street & Lafayette Avenue, was dedicated to the 12 unnamed cyclists who died on NYC streets in 2005.
The ghost bike was installed at the end of the 1st annual memorial ride on January 8, 2006. At that time, we knew of 8 unnamed riders from an article.
We later learned through another newspaper article that the NYPD counted 24 deaths in 2005, raising the number of unnamed cyclists to 12. This number was confirmed by the DOT in December 2007. The plaque was replaced during the 2nd annual memorial ride on January 7, 2007 to reflect the new number. In January, 2008 the DOT released statistics that counted 22 cyclists killed in 2005.
We know nothing more about these fallen cyclists than these conflicting statistics. We care about all cyclists killed on the city's streets, reported or unreported, included in official statistics or not.
In January 2008 we removed this ghost bike and plaques because of construction on Houston Street. We will re-install them soon.
