New York, NY (January 6, 2008) -- Families and friends of New Yorkers killed while biking and walking will lead the 3rd Annual Memorial Ride and Walk this Sunday. Organized by the Street Memorial Project, the event includes bike rides across four boroughs to each white-painted “Ghost Bike” installed at the scene of a bicyclist fatality, and a Memorial Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge in honor of pedestrians killed last year. There were 23 bicyclist and more than 100 pedestrian deaths in 2007, according to media reports. Official numbers from NYC DOT are pending.

Hundreds of bicyclists will visit each of the “Ghost Bikes” with riders from Brooklyn, Queens, and The Bronx converging in Manhattan. They will be joined by families and supporters crossing the Brooklyn Bridge on the Memorial Walk, and will convene at City Hall to dedicate memorials for the unknown bicyclists and pedestrians killed in 2007. Families, friends, and advocates will then hold a rally on the steps of City Hall to advocate for complete streets and demand that the City take street deaths seriously and make necessary improvements in engineering, enforcement, and public education.

The Street Memorial Project seeks to cultivate a compassionate and supportive community for survivors and friends of those lost, and to foster mutual respect among all people who share the streets.
