Brett was an employee of the Bike Gallery and loved racing cyclocross. The Sunday before his death, he placed third in singlespeeds at the Cross Crusade event at Rainier High School. It was his best finish ever.
Many in the Portland cycling community have shared memories of him here.
His friends and family have helped to establish the Brett Jarolimek Memorial Fund in his honor. A memorial ride was also held.
Brett's memorial has been met with many unusual circumstances. A memorial stencil painted on a nearby underpass was painted over by ODOT maintenance staff, who assert that it was a "very difficult" decision to remove it. Later, a thief stole and then returned the ghost bike with an attached apology.
Brett was in a marked bike lane traveling south (downhill) on N. Interstate Ave. The truck overtook him mid-way down the hill. The truck signaled a turn to go right (south) on Greeley and then turned in front of Brett. More details can be found here.
The truck driver had 25 previous traffic violation convictions. The driver was not issued a citation or charged in the crash.
