The local man who was struck and killed while riding his bicycle in
Indiana Township last week was remembered today in a special memorial
bike ride.

Fellow cyclists came out Sunday evening for the "Ghost Ride" in memory
of 52-year-old Don Parker. The ride started in Schenley Park in Oakland
and ended at a roadside memorial where Parker died.

A "Ghost Bike" was then placed on Harts Run Road, where the accident
happened last Thursday morning.

"We put out these 'ghost bikes' because they're a reminder to everyone
on the road that this isn't just a bike issue, but it's just a safety
issue in general," said Nick Drombosky, the event organizer.

Parker rode his bike to and from work everyday. Authorities say he was
struck from behind by a pick-up truck Thursday morning while on his
normal eight-mile commute.

Last week, police said they believed that the man driving the pick-up
truck may have been distracted. Police also confirm that Parker was
wearing a helmet and had lights on his bike.

Cyclists from throughout the area came by tonight to send a message for
themselves and for Parker - that what happened is not acceptable.

"Showing a little solidarity," said Dan Blumenfeld, a cyclist from
Brighton Heights. "We're all road users, we all need to worry about
things going wrong and it doesn't really matter whether you're a
pedestrian, a cyclist or a motorist. We've gotta be more careful; we've
gotta look out for one another."

"This could have been me," added Chris Richards, a cyclist from O'Hara
Township. "I'm about his age; I have three children; I've bicycled up
here countless times."

The ghost bike will be a constant reminder of what happened here long
after the flower memorials fade.

Also, the victim's family members said a special thanks to those who
came out to show that they care.

On Monday morning, there is another bike ride scheduled to take place to
honor Parker, and cyclists say they want to keep the message going that
the roadways are for everyone.
