A ghostbike was installed for Bent Rasmussen after a memorial ride at the end of March, 2009.
Bent Rasmussen was riding his bike in Sparta early in the morning of Februray 27, 2009 when he was struck by a school bus. He died of head injuries 2 days later.
An article in the Star Ledger spoke to his daughter, Karen:
Bent Rasmussen's memorial will be made of one of his old bicycles that had been vandalized.
"I felt the memorial was a great idea and it'll be a fitting
memorial to use his old bike," said Karen Rasmussen, who will be among
those leading her father's Ghost Bike ride on a tandem bicycle with her
5-year-old son, Miller.
The exact cause of Bent Rasmussen's accident remains under police investigation.
While witnesses initially reported that he was hit by the driver of
a small school bus who fled the scene, police later said video of the
accident taken from a security camera at town hall was inconclusive.
Karen Rasmussen said her father was in excellent health -- he rode
his bicycle daily, weather permitting, to Sparta High School where he
then ran around the track -- and can't believe that he might have just
fallen off his bike.
"I find it hard to believe that he just fell. He ran that route
every day. He was not some feeble old man. If he was your typical
78-year-old man, I could believe that," she said.
The family has asked that donations be made in his memory to the Lake
Mohawk Country Club, where Bent Rasmussen served as president from 1985
to 1990. His late wife, Suzanne, had served as a member of the Sparta
Board of Education for many years.
