Age: 36

Location:
Alameda and McClintock
Tempe , AZ
United States

Jay Fretz was crossing at a crosswalk at the
intersection of Alameda and McClintock in Tempe where he was
struck by an SUV that had run a red light.  He fought valiantly, however
succumbed to his injuries several hours later.  He is survived by his
Parents, Brother, Wife Angie and five-year-old Daughter Anika.  The
following weekend, Jay's family, along with many members of local
bicycle advocacy group Bike Saviours, installed a ghost
bike in memory of Jay at the site of the accident.

Following is an
excerpt from an interview with Jay's Parents by the local ABC TV
affiliate:  Creator of the Internet blog and consulting business “ Slay
Energy Vampires

,” Jay Fretz was determined to make himself and his family more
environmentally friendly. He had a passion to make the world a greener
place; a passion that would end up leading to his death.  He sold his
Family's second car with
the idea that he would take up biking and ride to work, 10 to 12 miles
away, with the ultimate goal of energy conservation and reducing his
carbon footprint.

Jay’s parents remember him as a caring and
compassionate husband and dad who gained a
mission in life with the birth of his daughter.

“He was always
thinking about ‘What are things going to be like when she grows up? Is
she going to have a good world to live in or are we going to be in real
trouble?’” recalled his father John.

Family and friends hope the
memorial will encourage others to carry on Jay’s eco-friendly mission
as well as promote bicycle safety awareness.

A sincere thank you
to the Ghost Bike organization for innovating such a powerful
expression of commemoration and awareness, and to Rebecca and the group
of compassionate folks at Bike Saviours in Tempe who were instrumental
in creating Jay's memorial.
