Oakland
The most recently installed ghost bikes have been placed by the East Bay Bike Coalition (EBBC). EBBC keeps extensive records of cycling crashes and fatalities in the East Bay area, namely Alameda and Costa Contra Counties, and has installed 2 ghost bikes this year (2007), one for Elena Castaneda and one for Ed Weiss. Another ghost bike was installed earlier for Matthew Sperry.
EBBC is a non-profit group founded in 1972 dedicated to “safeguarding the interests of cyclists” and “promoting bicycling as an everyday means of transportation and recreation.” EBBC works with 33 cities in the area as well as CalTrans and other agencies to improve cycling conditions. Among their numerous achievements, the main ones resulted in allowing bicycles on the BART, area ferries and East Bay bus system.
