Olga Evglevska Cook

Olga was riding her bike on the west side greenway, as she had done so many evenings when the driver of a truck took a right turn without yielding and fatally struck her. 

There's a sidewalk/bike path signal where the greenway crosses Chambers Street, but it is not timed to protect cyclists and pedestrians from turning drivers. A website was set up in her memory to fund advocacy measures to make this intesection safer for everyone.

Olga had been recently married to Travis who gathered with her many, many friends from all over the world to remember her several times, including at the installation of her ghost bike later that same summer. This is the third ghost bike we placed on the greenway. The first was for Carl Henry Nacht. The second was for Eric Ng. Eight more greenway cyclists were killed on 10/31/2017. All of these deaths
could have been prevented by simple improvements in design and
infrastructure. 

The ghost bike is located nearby to where the driver of a truck crashed into a school bus after fatally striking 8 cyclists riding on the greenway on October 31, 2017. Immediately afterward it became a place where mourners of these more recent fatalities have gathered and left flowers, notes and other momentos.
